The Health Planning and Information Unit was established as a sub-unit of the Health Planning Division within the Ministry of Health and the Environment from March 1994. The Unit was established primarily to manage data generated from all reporting sources as well as to provide relevant, accurate and timely information for decision making to Managers in Health and related sectors, agencies, institutions and communities.

During the early years of existence the unit was staffed with only two (2) employees who acted mainly as data entry clerks. As the unit became more functional the staffing was restructured and additional staff added.

The unit now refers to as the Health Planning and Information Unit is prepared to execute its mandate of guiding the planning process within the Ministry of Health and the Environment, and providing accurate information for decision making.
