The Health Planning and Information Unit primarily disseminates health information within the health sectors and on request to other ministries, students and researchers, and local, regional and international organisations.
While there are ten (10) information systems installed, only four (4) are currently in use due to a lack of human resource. The systems in use are: Mortality Data (Mortbase), Non-Communicable Diseases (NDC), Communicable Diseases (CD), and Maternal and Child Health/Family Planning (MCH/FP). In addition, the Public Health Laboratory Information System (PHLIS), which was designed to support analysis and reporting of many conditions important to Public Health was introduced in September 2000. It is the expectation that new surveillance systems will be integrated within the existing system.
